Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing is an assessment exercise you can conduct with your Scrum team to determine where you’re at in the process of becoming a highly efficient and effective team.
Example
Here is an example of how you can track the different phases:
| Forming | Storming | Norming | Performing |
| Our Scrum team has formed as of Jan 2, 2024. | Not achieved | Not achieved | Not achieved |
| We’ve conducted backlog creation and refinement along with exercises like the team agreement. | Not achieved | Not achieved | Not achieved |
| We’re off and running with sprint #1 as of Jan 17, 2024 and have clear direction from the product team. | There has been some disagreement about specific aspects of our Scrum process. | Not achieved | Not achieved |
| Achieved | We’ve identified some issues in sprint #3 and #4 that have impacted productivity and we’re attempting to resolve. | Some of the team members are starting to click and feel like we’re moving in the right direction. | Not achieved |
| Achieved | We’ve resolved the issues identified earlier, but we have 1 team member who is unhappy with the outcome. | Overall, the team is starting to perform consistently from sprint to sprint. | Not achieved |
| Achieved | The previous issue with the individual team member has been resolved after meeting 1:1 and implementing a tweak to our process. | We are delivering consistently and starting to see increases in our velocity. | Not achieved |
| Achieved | Achieved | The team is fully engrossed in our work and we continue to deliver consistently with very few issues. | For the first time, we actually got ahead in sprint #7 and delivered 1 additional user story ahead of schedule. |
| Achieved | Achieved | Achieved | We have shifted into the performing phase as of sprint #9. Team morale is high and we’re seeing both an increase in velocity and people taking initiative with tech debt. |
